My name’s Jim, I’m 25 years old. I live in Boston, MA. I just graduated with an MBA from Harvard, top of my class. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has invited me for an interview in their headquarters in Cupertino, CA. Tim reached out to Harvard in search of adding an addition to Apple’s business team. The news got me thrilled. I was ecstatic. I shed a tear of joy from the incredible offer. I right away called my parents’, family, and friends. I felt as though, my hard work paid off.
Tim, got me a plane ticket the next day. I could hardly sleep from excitement. I wake up early, get dressed, and walk to Wicked Bagel. I order a bagel & coffee. It’s 7:30 am and my flight’s at 1 pm. I chose to get to the airport early to research more on Tim and the team to be a step ahead. I get my iPhone out of my pocket, unsure of which app to use for my transportation to the airport. Uber, or Lyft?
Not sure which to use. Who would’ve known that this choice could impact my life in such a substantial way? I chose Uber. My driver arrives. I get in. He seems tired, it’s early, makes sense. I politely ask the driver, “how’re you feeling this fine morning sir?” He responds, “Crazy party last night, man, one for the books.” I’m not going to lie, I was alarmed but, nothing was going to ruin this glorious day. The man had a 4.8 rating so, I chose to trust him. As we get closer to the airport, I check out the driver, his eyes are closed, his foot’s still on the gas, the wheel begins to turn, a tree in my eye site, nothing I can do, it’s too late, the car’s at 33mph, I’m scared right now for my life, I close my eyes, I begin to pray, regretting every moment of trusting my driver, BOOM!
I awake in the hospital, a week later after suffering from a minor concussion. I open my eyes, the doctor greets me with the updated news. “Your memory from the week prior to your concussion has been wiped”, the doctor said. A few hours pass and they release me. I rest up at home in search of ways to get back into life. As I read all these interesting articles on how our society is developing, I stumble upon one that caught my eye, “The Evolution of the Employee”.
It talked about, the way the employee has evolved throughout the years. It gave me the drive to put myself back out there, in the “Gig Economy”. With my MBA, I was able to get some interviews with the startup’s in my area. While waiting for a response from the companies I stumbled upon several gigs to make money while I wait. I took on some gigs on Fiverr. I took on a gig called PICKL, where you can make money by helping brands locate their products at grocery stores. While taking on these gigs, I met some really cool people who connected me with more startups. I found one that I truly believed in and was ready to invest my time & money into. A few years later, we became one of the most known companies in Boston.
I land at San Jose airport. A driver awaits my arrival. He takes my bag and drives me to my hotel. I get to my room, shower, and get ready for my interview. The driver waits for me in the lobby. I come down, and he drives me to the headquarters.
“It’s nice to finally meet you”, Tim says, as he extends his hand for a shake. I shake his hand, and respond, “the pleasure’s all mine, thank you for this incredible opportunity.” Tim gives me a tour of the place, slowly guiding me to his office. As of now, we’re connecting, and I’m falling more and more in love with the place as the minutes go by. We enter his office. Tim begins to say, “I’m going to be straight with you, we are beginning a new product development team here at Apple and we want you to run the business side of it, what do you say?” I respond, “I’m in!” “Great, you’ll be working 9-5, 5 days a week”, he says. “Sound’s good to me”, I say.
I got a place close by. I wake up every morning at 6:30 am, eat, exercise, shower, and then head to work. I built myself a great routine and love the life I’m living. A few years later, we became one of the most profitable teams in Apple.
The employee has gone through an evolution. What once was is not anymore. The freedom to choose has broadened opportunities. So, if you could choose a path, which would you pick?
